Wheat Bran

The bran is the outer membrane or skin of the wheat berry and is similar in funcion to the shell of an egg.  It is composed of cellulose and hemicellulose and is undigestible bulk.

A wheat berry is made up of three components:  an outer skin, called the bran, an embryo, called the germ, and the nutritional endosperm, which contains proteins and starch.  The germ, which is similar to the yolk of an egg, is oily and rich in vitamin E.
